Art is a Blast!

Just look at his passion...!

“Art is a powerful tool,” said Fanon Hill a co-founder of the Black Male Identity project, a program dedicated to using art to shatter the negative stereotypes of Black males. “It has the power to humanize and shows my students that they can move beyond our worse circumstances and start anew.”

“Kids learn teamwork, confidence and a peace of mind,” said Nick Tissue an instructor of the martial art, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

But what is this power the arts seem to have on children. What is it about painting, or working on a piece of music, or learning to take down an attacker that gives children these benefits?

In this project I sought to explore different forms of art under different instructors and coordinators to see how in their eyes how art is making a difference in the lives of young kids.

And through this project I hope to convey as the image shows that art can indeed be a blast.

Marital Arts: More than Kicking and Screaming

Improvement of mind, body, and soul are three promises that most martial arts promise, but how are such improvements managed? How does learning how to block punches and take down attackers help a young child gain confidence? Fanon Hill, a leader of Baltimore’s Black Male Identity Project and Nick Tissue an instructor of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu has the answer.
